Painted on paper using ink, colour and gold leaf there screens , known as Bayou, “protection from the wind” were used as dividers both indoors and outdoors, the zigzag construction allowing them to be free-standing or wall mounted.

This beautiful print of ‘Birds of Paradise’ is by Benjamin Fawcett. The son of a ship's master, Fawcett was apprenticed at age 14 for seven years to William Forth, a bookseller and printer. His early works were mostly children's books but in about 1845 he formed a close working relationship with author, ornithologist and entomologist, Francis Orpen Morris.

Birds of Paradise was painted in the 19th century and displays two male great birds of paradise, performing their display dance. The male in the foreground has spread its wings, arched its back and bent its tail forward under its perch. Its long ornamental plumes are raised. When a female approaches the male freezes in this pose for seconds at a time. There are 42 species of birds of paradise, of which 36 are unique to New Guinea.

This Bison print is taken from 'Commentaries of Julius Caesar' originally a copper engraving by Cornelis Huyberts. It depicts an imposing bison dominating the landscape while looking straight at us.

The book itself is Julius Caesar’s firsthand account of the Gallic Wars, written as a third-person narrative. In it Caesar describes the battles and intrigues that took place in the nine years he spent fighting the Celtic and Germanic peoples in Gaul that opposed Roman conquest.

George Edwards was an English naturalist and ornithologist known as the “father of British ornithology".

Edwards travelled extensively through mainland Europe, studying natural history and gained a reputation for his coloured drawings of animals, especially birds.

This print is of part of a fresco found at the palace of Knossos. The palace had been the centre of a Bronze Age civilisation of the Minoans (named after the legendary King Minos). After its discovery it was excavated by an archeological team led by Sir Arthur Evans in the early 20th century. Evans would later re-imagine and partially restore the palace.

The fresco depicts a Griffin, a mythological creature with the head of an eagle and the body of a lion. In ancient Greek, they symbolised strength and bravery.

The colours of this fresco print would work well in a bedroom but equally a living room or conservatory.

André Marie Constant Duméril was a French zoologist. He was professor of anatomy at the Muséum national d’histoire naturelle and became a professor of herpetology and ichthyology.

Henri Marie Ducrotay de Blainville was a French zoologist and anatomist. His extensive study of mollusques produced several orders and genera for species found in France.

French born Major-General Claude Martin served in the British East India Company's Bengal Army. it was while he was in India that he started collecting works of art including 650 Company style paintings of birds which were painted by Mughal-trained painters. Émile-Alain Séguy was one of the major influential artists of the Art Deco period.
He studied at the School of Decorative Arts in Paris where he became distinguished for his drawing.

This travel poster was produced in 1982 promoting the Orient Express which ran between London, Paris, Milan and Venice. It was the most opulent way to travel taking in the most romantic and scenic views along the way.

Here the artist Pierre Fix-Masseau has depicted the Orient Express passing the ‘Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II’ the oldest shopping mall in Italy.
