French born Major-General Claude Martin served in the British East India Company's Bengal Army. it was while he was in India that he started collecting works of art including 650 Company style paintings of birds which were painted by Mughal-trained painters. One of these was this Black Stalk which we’ve have added a touch of colour to via some bright pink legs.
