Zebra - Stubbs

Zebra - Stubbs

£600.00

English artist George Stubbs was virtually self taught yet became perhaps the greatest horse painter of all time. The son of a leather worker he left his fathers trade at the age of 16 and made a living as a portrait painter and illustrator. Stubbs’s interest in anatomy led him to study human anatomy in New York at York County Hospital. Later, after a stint in Italy, he returned to England and with the help of his wife dissected horses and published The anatomy of the Horse. This understanding made Stubbs’s paintings the most accurate of the time and secured his career and success.

In later life Stubbs’s knowledge of anatomy transcended horses as he studied wild and exotic animals. We have taken this Stubbs Zebra into the present day by adding extra vibrancy and turning him into a polyptych.
