Scarlet Ibis 2

Scarlet Ibis 2

from £35.00

This stunning Scarlet Ibis was painted by Maria Sibylla Merian, one of the greatest botanical artist of her time and a respected scholar of the natural sciences.

Her fame rests on a remarkable journey from 1699 to 1701 to the Dutch colony of Surinam, South America. Made at her own expense and accompanied by her younger daughter Dorothea Maria, she studied the indigenous flora and fauna in their tropical habitat.

It resulted in a beautifully illustrated book, Metamorphosis insectorum Surinamensium, published in Amsterdam in 1705. Its contribution to natural science and stunning 60 engraved plates brought her international acclaim.
